The State Fire Marshal regulates the storage, transportation and handling of various hazardous materials. Licenses are issued annually for control of explosives, liquefied petroleum gas, and fireworks manufacturing facilities. Permits are issued for control of anhydrous ammonia and self-service dispensing of motor fuels.
During the summer of 1997, this Division initiated a technical training program and designated a senior compliance officer. The senior compliance officer provides technical support and training to the hazardous materials entities regulated by the Safety Fire Commissioner and conducts training for the fire service, related associations and the public.
5/20/2013 - Beginning January 1, 2007, anyone possessing a Level III Competency Certification will be required to take continuing education courses approved by the Commissioner and shall take no less than eight (8) hours every two (2) years.
The Georgia Blasting Assembly is offering a two day continuing education course to meet this requirement on September 12-13, 2013, at Unicoi State Park Lodge in Helen, Georgia.

08/06/2009 - The Hazardous Materials Division of the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office is seeking to update regulation 120-3-16, “Rules and Regulations for Liquefied Petroleum Gases.” Part of our goal is to update National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards 54 and 58 and to update the training requirements for Georgia liquefied petroleum gas industry workers. It is our expectation that the updating process will begin sometime in fall of 2009. In the meantime we are making a draft copy of 120-3-16 available for review.
